The feminine figure as a conveyor for morality: from Saadi to La Rochefoucauld
Résumé [English]
Although separated by several centuries and rooted in radically different cultural contexts, Saadi and La Rochefoucauld both assign a distinctive status to feminine imagery within their moral outlook. This raises the question of whether a shared symbolism can nourish such contrasting reflections on morality, human nature, and literary purpose. This study aims to compare the image of women in the works of Saadi and La Rochefoucauld, highlighting the ethical, cultural, and literary foundations that shape their respective visions. The research adopts a comparative approach based on critical textual analysis, attentive to each author’s cultural, religious, and philosophical background.Under Saadi’s pen, woman appears as a mediator of wisdom—sometimes a model of virtue, sometimes a moral warning—embodying an optimistic and normative view of human nature consistent with Islamic ethics, which values virtue, temperance, and social harmony. By contrast, in La Rochefoucauld’s writings, woman becomes a tool of moral inquiry, serving primarily to expose the mechanisms of self love, vanity, and collective illusion that underpin the aristocratic society of his time. This comparative perspective thus reveals two opposing uses of the feminine figure: a moral and educational humanism in Saadi, and a lucid, analytical skepticism in La Rochefoucauld. Despite these divergences, both moralists make woman the central index of the values and internal conflicts characteristic of their respective eras.
